Books that Nourish my Soul

March 18, 2021

I was recently asked if there are any books that help me stay positive when times are tough. Although I don’t have a lot of actual self-help style books in my book shelf, I still have books that I come back to again and again. These books always bring me comfort when I’m feeling down, or when I need a reminder to breathe and be mindful.

  1. The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer: I’m still reading this one, because I’m taking it in slowly. There are SO many powerful lessons in this book. It’s forced me to really go within myself to see how my thoughts and feelings about situations can impact my life.
  2. The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Weiking: The Danish really do have cozy comfort down pat! Especially when it’s cold in the winter, I definitely feel cooped up. Creating cozy areas and mindful activities within our home helps me to see our space as a sanctuary.
  3. The Little Book of Lykke by Meik Weiking: Apparently the Danish are also some of the happiest people on Earth! This little book gives great clues into how you can bring happiness into all areas of your life.
  4. The Secret Daily Teachings by Rhonda Byrne: You really can create the life of your dreams…by believing you already have it! Our mind is such a powerful tool, and this book reminds me of that. Our perspective and our thoughts towards everything in life is what attracts the things we want…or don’t want! It’s our choice!
  5. Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen: This book is pure comfort to me. I am also a sucker for the 2005 movie with Keira Knightley. I call it my “comfort movie,” and the book definitely achieves the same effect. It’s just old and familiar and helps me settle when my thoughts want to race.
  6. I Am Peace by Susan Verde: Yes, this is technically a children’s book. But my mom bought it for me when we were in Edmonton in the hospital with Arden and said to me, “This reminds me of you.” It’s all the little things that I would tell my students…the kind of advice that I should be taking and not just giving! It’s a simple and beautiful little reminder to breathe and be mindful.

I hope you enjoyed my list! I also hope that this helps you build your own personal list of books that nourish your soul!

Happy reading!

XO, Rayel
