Formula Mixing Hack

Shaker bottles used to mix protein powder work wonders for formula! When we were in the NICU and PICU, our nurses were always complaining when they mixed formula with the bottles they were provided. The reason? There were always lumps of powder that weren’t completely mixed in. This is a huge problem for tube-fed kiddos, because feed pumps will often ring off with a clogged line if you have any lumps. The metal mixer ball that comes with shaker bottles helps to whisk in the formula so that you don’t end up with any lumps. This also works well if you need to add in extra protein or fortifying powders for breast milk. You can also just toss the smaller shaker bottles into your bottle sterilizer for sanitizing purposes. We use Blender Bottles but there are lots of different brands that work well. Blender Bottles also sometimes come with a stacking system so that you can easily store unmixed formula powder in the stackable portion of the bottle.
