About a month ago Brodi built us a new corner unit for our TV and we’ve been absolutely loving it!
We’ve been in this house since the summer of 2018, and when we moved in, we brought an entertainment unit with us. We had used that unit in a condo that we lived in while Brodi was doing his physio masters in Edmonton. It fit perfectly and looked beautiful in that condo, but it definitely wasn’t made for our current home.
With us not wanting to spend a ton to upgrade our space and make more room, Brodi found an idea he liked online, and designed/built this corner unit.
Lucky for us, some family friends had barn wood boards that they were willing to give us. Brodi took on the long process of stripping/sanding the boards down, and staining them with varathane crystal clear satin finish. He also stained the cut ends of the boards with a solution he made out of vinegar and steel wool. The result was amazing, and you would never know they were the same, greyed barn boards.
The corner unit needed to be strategically mounted to our wall, as we live in a modular home and the walls are not dry-walled. I was so grateful that Brodi’s dad and my dad were able to come over and help with the mounting process, so that my lifting skills were not required! (haha).
This unit has completely changed how we organize our space. The shelf underneath provides space for our sound bar and receiver, and Brodi created an insert at the back so that the cords can be hidden. It’s amazing how many things we had inside of our old entertainment centre that we didn’t need. Old electronics, game consoles, and cords. Making this change was a great excuse to clear out all of that clutter!
I’m still working on finding affordable items to style this area. I want it to look great, but I also want to make it functional in order to store all of Arden’s toys and supplies. I’ve had some friends make some great suggestions, so we’ll see what changes we decide to make soon!
