Arden’s First Time in a Restaurant

October 26, 2021

Last night we went to The Keg in Grande Prairie to celebrate our beautiful niece Ashlynn’s 21st birthday! Not only was this a milestone for Ash, but it was also a big step for Arden! This was the first time we’ve taken Arden into any public building other than a hotel or a hospital!

I was definitely a little bit nervous. For the past year and a half, we’ve done everything we can to protect our boy from covid-19 and other illnesses. Since Arden requires a ventilator almost 24/7, we know that it could be difficult for him to fight off any illness he might contract. However, we also understand that as a family, we need to experience as many of the big moments as we can, because they won’t come again.

The Keg asked for proof of double vaccination at the door, and that made us feel a lot more comfortable. We were able to use the little elevator to get Arden, his stroller, his vent, suction, emergency trach kit, and feed supplies up to the dining area.

During supper we only had to suction Arden a couple times, and he had an absolute blast! Arden was babbling up a storm, laughing throughout conversation, and waving and signing at everyone. He loves being in the presence of our family, and constantly looks for ways to garner their attention. His 6 year old cousin Kellen is his latest hero, and he’s always looking to Kellen for playtime and approval.

Not only was this a big step for Arden, but it was also a wonderful time for Brodi and I. This was the first time that we’ve been able to eat out at a restaurant together since Arden was in the hospital last year. To be honest, we were big fans of home date nights long before Arden came along, but it’s still great to get out ONCE in a while!!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: we have the MOST supportive family. They make it possible for us to attend events with Arden with as much ease as possible. It can be nerve wracking when you’re in public trying to parent a child with differences. Sometimes we surprise people, and they’re not sure how to act or what to say. But Arden’s needs are just our “normal.” With our family, we never have to feel uncomfortable, and they surround us with a circle of love that gives us the confidence to have new experiences.

Arden’s first trip to a restaurant was a success! Happy birthday to Ashlynn!

XO, Rayel
